What Your Dreams Are Saying

Today I have the honor of being hosted by P.S. Bartlett on day six of my Rave Reviews Book Club “Spotlight” Author blog tour.  This has been an amazing week as I have traveled to different blogs and made an appearance.  If you missed any of them, you can find a list of my blog tour stops on the Rave Reviews Book Club site.

What Your Dreams Are Saying

Excerpt from Chapter 45

I was rarely able to remember my dreams. But one night I had this strange dream that I had accepted a job with the city. When I arrived on my first day there was no one there. I sat and waited. Finally, people showed up with Christmas decorations. I noticed that there were no administrators. It was Columbus Day and the office was closed. I asked about the office being closed and was told  that administrators were off but everyone else had to be there. They were setting up for Christmas (a little strange since it was Columbus Day).

My Daughter, The Ghost Buster

It’s Day 3 of my “Spotlight” Author blog tour with Rave Reviews Book Club and I am featured as a guest on the Writer’s Chat.  Please hop on over and read my guest post and leave a comment.

I Am A Survivor!

I AM A SURVIVOR!

Yes, I am a SURVIVOR! I fought the battles and decided that I would not allow myself to be a victim any longer.

After years of allowing myself to sink deeper and deeper into depression as a result of my isolation and never-ending medical and legal battles, I had to choose whether I was going to stay in the unhealthy role of victim or begin to live my life despite its many limitations. I chose to SURVIVE!

Please join me on day three of my “Spotlight” Author blog tour with Rave Reviews Book Club.  Today I am being hosted by Harmony Kent, Harmony Kent Online.  Take a moment to visit Harmony’s blog and read my guest post.

I am excited to announce that I have been chosen the “Spotlight” Author at Rave Reviews Book Club.  One of the many exciting perks is a blog tour.  Today I am featured on jinlobify.  Please visit the blog and follow with me on my fascinating blog tour.

An Author’s Freedom

IT’S BLOG RECRUITING DAY AT RAVE REVIEWS BOOK CLUB!

Book Club Badge Suggestion copy (1)

I joined Rave Reviews Book Club back in December during its infancy and became Membership Director for the club.  I love the opportunity to be able to reach out to authors, both new and those with a few books under their belt, as well as those who love to read. As a newly published author I was excited at the idea of joining a club whose motto was to Propel, Promote, and Profile Indie Authors.  Writing and publishing my book was one thing but learning how to promote and market my book was scary.  Authors have many options today when publishing and promoting their books.  We have the freedom to choose whether we want to struggle to find a publisher willing to publish our books, we have the freedom to choose to self-publish, and we have the freedom to decide how we market not only our books but ourselves.  There are many sites out there willing to market your books; but what else do they offer?  Do they offer support, mentorship, and fellowship among like-minded authors?  The answer is that they will be difficult to find.

One club that does offer all this and more is Rave Reviews Book Club. Authors and readers alike have the freedom to choose to join this amazing book.  I am extending an offer to everyone reading this post today to join our amazing club.  Membership fees are currently reduced to $15.00 a year.  You may ask what you get for your $15.00 a year.  Not only will you get your name and book cover featured on our Book Selections page but you will have access to our mentoring program, get tweet support from our Tweet Support Team as well as other members, and free or reduced entry into many of our contests.  Rave Reviews Book Club members have the opportunity to have their book selected as a Book of the Month, the opportunity of being chosen as a “Spotlight” Author, or selected as a #PUSHTUESDAY winner receiving tweet support for 24 hours.  Rave Reviews Book Club offers contests where winners can receive numerous prizes.  A writing contest just ended and a winner will be selected by the end of July.  Currently the club is featuring today’s Blog Recruiting Day contest that allows followers to vote on their favorite recruiting day blog post thus giving the winning member a #PUSHTUESDAY slot.

A Common Sense Approach to Overcoming a Medical Crisis

I met Shirley last fall just as Allergic to Life was published.  She contacted me because she also had experienced several horrible health issues.  We connected immediately and it was wonderful to find someone who understood what it was like to have multiple health issues and sensitivities to medications.  We have both since become board members of Rave Reviews Book Club and strengthened our friendship.

During our conversations Shirley talked about a book she had just published preserving a piece of history among a small catholic community (she is an amazing historian).  She also told me that she one day also wanted to write a book about her own medical issues.

I am pleased today to share Shirley with all of you and an excerpt from her upcoming book.

Kathryn, thank you so much for inviting me on a tour of your website. You asked me to talk about my health issues and here is an excerpt from my soon-to-be-released book…

A Common Sense Approach To Overcoming A Medical Crisis”

Soon-to-be released Book Excerpt

It all began to spiral out of control around 1991 when my mother passed away. That was the most traumatic time in my life. I watched her go through surgery five years before for cancer and then five years to the day, the cancer returns. The doctors didn’t have any answers that I could see. They just did what they always do—treat the patient with chemo and offer up no real solutions.

I watched her and took care of her from the beginning when she first got the diagnosis to the end when she lay dying in her bedroom down the hall from where I slept. The stress of her ordeal took its toll on me but I didn’t actually get seriously ill until it was all over.

We got the bill from the hospital and it added up to about $200,000. And for what? You couldn’t understand the charges on that long statement. It was just too complicated.

I said to myself, “There has got to be a better way and I’m going to find it.”

I did not know what was lying in wait right around the corner; waiting to grab hold and take me on a long horrible ride.

I had a difficult time trying to overcome health issues and I am happy to say I did it and my life is back to some semblance of normalcy. After the entire episode was over, I realized that I needed to do something with my life. I refused to believe that this was it—that it’s over.  And so I got involved in community-related projects, and wrote a book to preserve our community’s history.

I was having conversations all the time about women’s health and people were giving me so many compliments including how gorgeous my hair  is that I was prompted to write a book sharing my tips.

A COMMON SENSE APPROACH TO OVERCOMING A MEDICAL CRISIS will be available soon!

Bio:
Shirley Harris-Slaughter is a community activist having been a school board trustee in the Oak Park School District and mentored four freshmen girls in the Winning Futures Program.  Shirley loves trains, vintage clothes, and old buildings with historic significance. So it was a natural that she would write about growing up in historic Royal Oak Twp. and keep alive a Catholic Community that was about to lose its history and identity. It seems that everything she loved closed down and she was not about to let any of it be forgotten. Shirley joined Rave Reviews Book Club because she recognized the need to support fellow authors in order to move forward in her own endeavors. She already had a thriving relationship with twitter followers including Nonnie Jules, President who was supportive and a mentor; and Kathryn Treat, Board Director. “We all had the same goals so it was a natural fit.” Shirley did a book review on “Allergic to Life” during the formation stages of the book club and was learning how to tweet.

Happy Blogiversery – Where has the time gone?

It’s My Blogiversery!  Let’s Celebrate!

Where has the time gone?  I wrote my first blog post on April 25, 2012.  Here we are two years later and so much as happened.  I finally published my book, “Allergic to Life:  My Battle for Survival, Courage, and Hope” (How amazing is that?), had a book launch party, and did a meet the author at a health food store. My list of followers continues to grow and I have  met so many amazing authors, bloggers, and others who suffer from environmental or other chronic illness.  I have joined a writing group, PnP Authors, and became Membership Director for Rave Reviews Book Club.

During the past two years I have made myself known on the social media scene despite my fears by:

  • had  website designed (kathryntreat.com)
  • started an author page on Facebook
  • joined LinkedIn
  • set up boards on Pinterest
  • started tweeting a Twitter
  • started a second blog, Be My Guest, for authors (There will be a special gift for those that sign up to follow my new blog.  The names of new followers will go into a hat and my husband will draw a winner).
  • and yes even got myself on Tumblr

I have also had a wonderful book blog tour where I was hosted on 12 blogs over a period of a month.

In honor of my Blogiversery, I am having a giveaway.  The winners will be determined through a Rafflecopter Giveaway.   The giveaway starts now and will run through the 25th of May.  There will be  chances to enter more than once. To find out what and how many gifts (yes there is more than one since “it is my second blogiversary”)  are available.  I know my blogiversery doesn’t officially happen until next week but why wait to start the fun!
